L’Erbolario and animal testing in cosmetics
Although the European Cosmetics Regulation expressly prohibits animal testing for cosmetic purposes, our commitment to rejecting all forms of animal testing dates back to the creation of our very first phytocosmetic.
For many years, we campaigned with LAV – the Italian Anti-Vivisection League – for a ban on animal testing for cosmetics. In 1992, we collaborated with LAV on a joint initiative involving thousands of Italian herbalists. As part of this initiative, we sent over 20,000 postcards to the European Parliament, calling for the abolition of animal testing.
In September 2004, we celebrated a significant victory with LAV when the ban on testing finished products on animals came into effect. Although this achievement is just a drop in the ocean, we are proud to have played a part in it!
Raw material testing
However, upon achieving this goal, a contradiction emerged, as it was possible to continue testing raw materials on animals.
In 2006, we adopted the international ‘Stop Animal Testing’ standard promoted in Italy by LAV, committing to use only raw materials that meet its criteria.
A new battle, a new victory.
On 11 March 2013, the EU introduced a total ban on the testing of cosmetic ingredients on animals. This was a huge achievement for anyone who loves animals as much as we do!
As long-standing supporters of LAV, we renewed our commitment to animal welfare by launching two special projects dedicated to protecting dogs and cats: ‘Insieme contro ogni forma di abbandono’ (Together against all forms of abandonment) in 2023 and ‘Insieme per gli animali’ (Together for animals) in 2024. The two initiatives made it possible to launch a national campaign offering free microchipping and neutering for cats and dogs, designed to promote responsible relationships with companion animals.
